Nerves are a natural part of an interview. And, frankly, being a little nervous isn't a terrible thing since it keeps us on our toes. However, if nerves start to overtake you, they can derail your shot at the job. Therefore, it's often helpful to take a few steps to ensure you're cool and calm throughout the discussion.

First - breathe. Spend a few minutes before you enter the boardroom centering yourself with slow, deep breaths. This will help to relax your body and your mind.

Second - hydrate. Be sure to drink lots of liquid to keep your body calibrated. And, take a bottle of water with you to the interview. This will help you feel more alert.

Third - talk. Interviewers are more successful when they sound strong and confident. Warm up your vocal chords before your actual interview (particularly if it's an early morning phone interview) by doing something as simple as talking to yourself or reading out loud. This will help to reduce the likelihood that your voice cracks.

Finally - if you start to feel like your nerves are getting the better of you, don't stress. Your interviewer actually is rooting for you to have a successful discussion. Therefore, you can score some "endearing" points by simply calling it out. Gently smile and say something like "I can tell I'm nervous, please bear with me." Being honest about obvious nerves will not only show that you're self aware, but actually might help you relax since you've basically neutralized your psychological elephant in the room.
